📍 On April 4, 2025, the First European Union – Central Asia Summit was held in Samarkand, with the participation of the heads of Central Asian states and representatives of the European Union. The President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, also signed the Joint Declaration, which emphasizes the strategic importance of partnership and sustainable development in the region.
🟣 The declaration specifically highlights the key role of civil society in promoting the rule of law, human rights, gender equality, freedom of expression and association, as well as in combating corruption and strengthening democratic institutions.
Quote from the declaration:
“The promotion and protection of the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms are a shared fundamental value. Ensuring freedom of expression and association, creating an enabling environment for civil society and independent media, and protecting human rights defenders remain at the core of EU–Central Asia relations.” (Paragraph 16)
🔗 Special attention is given to the importance of the EU–Central Asia Civil Society Forum as a platform for dialogue and cooperation between the regions.
For civil society organizations, this is an important signal and an additional opportunity to participate in regional and international initiatives, promote their programs, and strengthen partnerships.
